Crime in SA has gotten outta of control …If only the government would admit it and start working on it….

Hijackers gun down Lucky Dube

Reggae star Lucky Dube, 43, was shot dead in a hijacking in Rosettenville, Johannesburg, on Thursday night, police said.

Captain Cheryl Engelbrecht said the incident took place at about 20:20 when the singer and performer was driving a blue Polo in the Johannesburg suburb.

She said Dube was dropping off his son in the area when he was attacked.

“His son was already out of the car. When he saw what was happening, he ran to ask for help.”

The boy was too traumatised to provide police with any information, Engelbrecht said.

The hijackers were still at large.

Melvin Khumalo from Gallo Records - Dube’s recording company - was not willing to comment on the incident, saying the company was attending to Dube’s family.

Khumalo was on the scene in Rosettenville on Thursday.

Dube, born in Johannesburg in 1964, was named “Lucky” as he was born in poor health and doctors thought he would die, according to Wikipedia.

But Dube survived and went on to become a frontline artist in the reggae genre.

He had recorded over 20 albums in his music career which spanned over 20 years - according to the singer’s website www.luckydubemusic.com.

His albums included Rastas Never Die, Think About The Children, Soul Taker, Trinity and his latest, released in 2006, is called Respect.

The reggae sensation, who did not drink or smoke cigarettes or marijuana, despite the association of the substance with Rastafarians, had won over 20 awards for his music contribution locally and internationally.

UPDATE:Shock at Lucky Dube’s murder

The death of Reggae star Lucky Dube was greeted with shock on Friday morning.

Dube, 43, was shot dead in a hijacking in Rosettenville, Johannesburg, on Thursday night, police said.

Captain Cheryl Engelbrecht said the incident took place around 20:20 when the singer and performer was driving a blue Polo in the Johannesburg suburb.

Khumalo was on the scene in Rosettenville on Thursday.

The Pan Africanist Congress on Friday expressed its “shock and anger” at Dube’s cold-blooded murder.

“It signifies yet again how much criminals disregard human life,” said party co-ordinator Modini Maivha.

“We pass our condolences to Lucky’s family and the families of other victims of violent crime in the country. We call on the government to empower citizens… by releasing crime statistics regularly.

“This will enable us to appreciate the levels of crime and galvanise South Africans to do more to help our under-resourced police force.”

The African Christian Democratic Party also sent its condolences to Dube’s family and called for the reinstatement of the death penalty.

The party’s Western Cape representative Hansie Louw said in a statement: “Will the death penalty not reduce the senseless killings? There is no respect for life.”

Dube, born in Johannesburg on August 3, 1964, was named “Lucky” as he was born in poor health and doctors thought he would die, according to a Wikipedia entry.

UPDATE:Hunt on for Dube’s killers

Johannesburg police were on Friday looking for three men driving a blue VW Polo believe to have been involved in the murder of reggae star Lucky Dube, 43.

Dube was shot dead in a botched hijacking in Rosettenville, around 20:20 on Thursday night, said police spokesperson Captain Cheryl Engelbrecht.

The singer was travelling in a grey Chrysler with his two teenage children at the time.

Engelbrecht said Dube had dropped off his son and daughter, aged 15 and 16, when he was attacked. The killers fled the scene, leaving the musician’s car behind. The children were unhurt.

“His son was already out of the car. When he saw what was happening, he ran to ask for help.”

The boy was too traumatised to provide police with any information, she added.

Melvin Khumalo from Gallo Records - Dube’s recording company - was not willing to comment on the incident, saying the company was attending to Dube’s family.

Tough times

Lucky Philip Dube was born in Ermelo, east of Johannesburg, on August 3, 1964. After a few failed pregnancy attempts by his mother Sarah, Lucky came into the world, according to an entry on his website, luckydubemusic.com.

His mother considered his birth so fortunate that she aptly named him ‘Lucky’,

Born into a single parent family, times were tough for a black boy born into poverty under the Group Areas Act and the Pass Laws of the time.

Lucky’s parents had separated before he was born. His mother was the only breadwinner in the family and was forced to relocate to find work, leaving Lucky and his siblings, Thandi and Patrick, to be cared for by his grandmother.

With a father who drank heavily, Lucky was somewhat relieved he did not get to know his father when he was younger as he is certain it would have influenced him and swayed his career.

Lucky had only ever been drunk once, as a young boy, after being tricked at a party. So awful was the experience that he swore off alcohol, cigarettes and drugs completely.

He began working as a gardener at the age most children enter school. He later joined a school himself.

Although a clearly underprivileged child and despite being taught in Afrikaans, Lucky excelled and joined the school choir.

He was a natural performer and when the choirmaster walked out of their practise one day, Lucky took over. His popularity amongst his teachers and peers grew dramatically and Lucky was now finding school to a safe haven in his life, according to his website.

Dube went on to become a frontline artist in the reggae genre.

I was really shocked to learn the death of my #1 reggae star Lucky Dube this mourning at work. I am really sad and mad for the way some humans carry out unthinkable acts. He fought for freedom in his country through his music, and now betrayed by his own. Seem like his message all these years fell on deaf ears of these criminals.
“Not every black man is my brother, not every white man is my enemy” (Lucky Dube)

May his SOUL rest in PEACE

I was personally very shocked on hearing that, Lucky Dube, a humble person was brutally killed by thugs in cold blood.

When the murderers are caught, they must be brought to justice. They should be tortured thoroughly and be hanged.

May the Almigthy who has called him rest his soul in eternal peace and bless his family.

It is very unfortunate for great people like lucky who fought for freedom through his skills in music to be killed in such an in-human manner

I reccomend the government of south africa to search for those thugs and put them on firing squad for the good of the people.

May the good Lord rest his soul in eternal peace.

The world of music has lost one of the best ever existed. Back in 1994, he performed here in the Seychelles & it was amazing.

I guess the South African police need to catch whoever committed this crime.

“Together as one”, we should thank God for the man he was, he is & will be…

The man is dead, but his music will not.

He Brought Joy to many of us…

    May he rest in peace…

first of all, rest in peace and I do hope that they are going to take recomanders, those who commissioned this barbarism act of violence there should of course a question of interest behind of his death, probably otherwise I see no reason why they should kill such an artist, interenationally well-known… I dop hope for the first the south african will be able to clarify this case, and present the world the real people who planned it. stay in peace for ever.

Indeed Africa has lost a great star ever in the world of music. Lucky Dube was a legend now a lasting heroe in most countries around the globe.
i personally spent time to know much about the kind of person he was, he really sang passionately with a great feeling. in fact the perpetrators must be brought to book, which ever severe punishment existst in that country should be accorded on them when they are found. luck why this too sadden? you left us too sudden and painful, May the Good lord grant you a place in his kingdom till we meet again. we will always love you and your music, live on forever.
    Warning
South Africa, be careful, this is getting too much, Tharbo Mberki wake up and do something to apprehend the perpetrators.

Oh, how tragic for the death of my man, my best musician ever; lucky dube!!!

I have just seen this website, but all along i have been sending tributes using other websites since i leant about his death. I dont want to miss anything written about my star, lucky dube.

Up to now, i’ve not come to terms with lucky dube’s death. The world is so cruel, how could they murder a peace-loving man in cold blood?

I am gonna buy all dube’s 20 albums as a tribute to him bse i have nothing more i can do to honour him. I loved dube with all my heart and may his soul rest in erternal peace.

Living in San Francisco, Ca. bayarea, I always made it to his shows. To think I saw him in San Francisco @ Ruby Skye on September 12th, 2007 shortly before his death. Here then & gone today. How devastating it was to us fans, his family w/ new wife & baby, & not to forget his band members. So energized! To this day, I listen to his music every day. I hope in the near future, they will have a public viewing open for tourists, to visit his grave site in South Africa, like Bob Marley’s in St. Ann, Jamaica.
We will never forget you, Lucky
